Join me on this humorous expedition along the lines of the “Yes Day Challenge” in Pakistan, where I embraced spontaneity by saying “yes” to every reasonable request for an entire day. Let’s indulge in crispy parathas over a breakfast affair at a local dhaba and ride a motorbike without a helmet; every moment was filled with laughter and some unexpected surprises. A sequined outfit designed by a friend, and inviting all the people we would pass by to come for lunch-the excitement of crossing the comfort zone included-was memorable as the nice conversations and new acquaintances that followed.
The fun is that it’s a completely packed day with all sorts of exciting challenges-including an impromptu dance-off by the waterfront, and a messy Bun Kebab Challenge that had me in stitches. As the sun set, I really took stock of how much saying “yes” can open doors to spontaneous joy and memories that will never be forgotten. With the importance of embracing the life undertaken with unpredictability and making connections with people who one is spending the day with-and most importantly, laughing at the usual mundane occasions-Yes Day becomes a fun-filled exercise.
Whether you need inspiration to break free from the routine or you just want to enjoy life with a smile, this blog will invite you out of your comfort zone with inspiring and funny stories. Find out how saying just a simple “yes” leads you into a day full of laughter and great memories. Are you ready to have your very own Yes Day? Come along as we revel in the wonder of spontaneity and the delight of embracing surprises!

EMBRACING THE “YES” DAY CHALLENGE: A RIDICULOUS ADVENTURE OF SAYING “YES” IN PAKISTAN
Life is full of choices, and while most people tend to play it pretty safe, there is something liberating about stepping outside your comfort zone. My inspiration came from the popular movie idea that has been dubbed the “Yes Day.” I decided to take on my own “Yes” Day Challenge-to say “yes” to every reasonable request for a whole day. I had no inkling that this would unleash a series of hilarious, unexpected, and downright absurd adventures into the vibrant context of Pakistan.

What is a “Yes” Day?
The idea of a “Yes Day” is quite simple to understand : you say “yes” to all reasonable requests for one day from friends, family, and sometimes even strangers.
Although exciting, it comes with its fair share of risks-when living in a very diverse and busy place, like in Pakistan.

Preparation
For starters, I got a group of friends as equally interested in the concept. We agreed to keep the requests light-hearted and safe, along with certain ground rules: no illegal activities, and everything should be reasonable, no skydiving or running a marathon… at least not today.

Morning Madness
I was excited yet apprehensive as the sun rose high. The first challenge came from my friend Ayesha, who invited me to begin the day with a breakfast of “karak chai” and “parathas” at a local roadside dhaba (theater of sorts). Normally, I would have opted for a healthy breakfast at home, but this was my “Yes Day.” We jumped into a rickshaw and headed out.
So, we settle into this corner of the dhaba, and I could sense my day off to a roaring start with the crispy parathas and spicy chutney. It had all started so well. Ayesha then challenged me to take a selfie with the dhaba’s quirky mascot—a life-sized cutout of a Bollywood star. I agreed, and the locals, who were gossiping and laughing amongst themselves, burst out in roar of laughter as I posed dramatically .The Ride Once Can Avoid
Over breakfast, Bilal piped up with an idea: why not ride a motorbike without wearing a helmet? Generally, safety is my top priority, but I thought that on my Yes Day, I could afford to take one risky step. We climbed onto Bilal’s motorbike and reveled in the thrill of feeling the wind in my hair as we sped up through Karachi streets.
What I did not bargain for was that people would turn to look at us. Many were laughing, some scowling, while others were urging us on. It was exciting, and we felt like we were doing something rather daring by disrupting the tired scheme of everyday life.

Retail Therapy Gone Wild
Our next visit was to a very busy bazaar. That was when my friends decided to test how seriously I would take my “yes” spirit. Ayesha suggested we hit the shop and let her pick an outrageous outfit for me to wear. I did not expect her to pick a bright, sequined shalwar kameez that sparkled under the sun.
Are you for real?” I ask, laughing, at the thought of walking around in such an eye-catching outfit. But I nodded, and with a gleam in her eye, she handed over the outfit.
The shopkeeper burst out laughing when I tried it on, and even strangers would stop to admire-or mock-mine new look. My friends urged me to strut down the street with my dazzling outfit. And with every step, I felt embarrassment mixed with hilarity at how absolutely ridiculous I looked. But the laughter from my friends and passersby made it all worthwhile.

Lunch with Strangers
We stopped at a small restaurant to have lunch along the road. And here I had my second test: Ayesha was sure that I shouldn’t refuse to invite a complete stranger to accompany us. Now, my hesitation was over and I get up to cross the room with its tables to a table where a young couple was sitting.
“Hi! We’re having a Yes Day and thought you might want to join us for lunch,” I said, half-expecting them to decline. Much to my surprise, they smiled and agreed. Over biryani and naan we swapped stories about our lives, and they shared experiences living in Karachi. Refreshing encounter. Really glad I got out of comfort zone for this one.

An Improvisational Dance Contest
We walked along the waterfront after lunch. We passed by one corner of the street where there were street performers dancing to some sort of traditional tune. In the blink of an eye, Bilal turned to me and challenged me to dance with them. “Say yes!” he urged.
It was like the beat produced and everyone clapped as I couldn’t help but end up in a dance competition. My moves may have been awkwardly jerky, but the crowd’s laughter and cheers were so infectious. The capture by Ayesha on her phone, this has quickly made it one of the most excitable moments of the day for me.

The Food Challenge
And so, as sunset approaches, the boys make one last challenge for us: the infamous “Bun Kebab Challenge.” It’s a local specialty made of a spicy potato patty sandwiched between two buns, typically topped with chutney and onions. The twist: no hands allowed.
It made me laugh to remember it. We did it in a park in our town, and it was absolute chaos. There were buns spread across our faces and spicy chutney flying everywhere–people all over, basically. We were having fun at our attempt to take bites so we wouldn’t be an absolute mess. So here we were: triumphant but sticky and funny-looking.

Reflection on the Day
It was now the end of the day. I felt a mix of accomplishment and fatigue. I was very much out of my comfort zone, much in ways beyond even my most imaginative expectations. I had laughed more in this past month than ever. I met other people and made memories for life.
Experience taught me that there was value in such spur-of-the-moment decisions and being spontaneous about new adventures. Sometimes saying “yes” leads to the best unexpected joys and connections. It reminded me that life was too short to always play it safe; embracing the chance to be impulsive can be very liberating.
